Tell Us When and Where You Were Born

Rashi, Surya Rashi and Lagna — Which One Matters?

Ask an Indian family pandit for your rashi and they mean your Chandra rashi — the sign occupied by the Moon when you were born. It drives your daily rashifal, the Guna Milan score in kundli milan before shaadi, and even the first syllable often suggested for a child's naam. Because the Moon crosses a full sign in roughly two and a quarter days, siblings or friends born just a day or two apart may end up with different rashis.

We report your Sun sign twice. The sidereal (nirayana) version follows Lahiri, or Chitrapaksha, ayanamsa — the standard adopted by the Government of India's Rashtriya Panchang. The tropical (sayana) version is the birthday-month sign printed in Western magazine horoscopes. Today the gap between the two systems is close to 24°, so your Western sign frequently lands one sign later than your Vedic one.

Lagna, the ascendant, is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the minute and city of your birth — Delhi and Chennai give different answers for the same clock time. Every bhava in your kundli is counted from it, so it shapes the whole chart, and it explains why twins delivered a few minutes apart can still have distinct horoscopes.

Frequently asked questions

My newspaper rashifal shows a different sign — which is correct?
Many English papers and apps list Sun signs by birth month, while Hindi rashifal columns and panchang-based predictions use the Chandra rashi. The Sun moves to a new sign about once a month, but the Moon shifts every couple of days, so the two rarely coincide. For Vedic predictions and matchmaking, go by the Moon sign shown here.
I only know my approximate time of birth. Can I still use this?
Yes, with some care. The Sun sign is almost never affected. The Chandra rashi holds steady for most of a day, unless the Moon was crossing into a new sign around your birth. Lagna is the sensitive one — it rotates through all twelve signs in 24 hours — so confirm the time on your hospital record or janam patri before using it for kundli milan or a muhurat.
