What is a Janam Kundli?
In most Indian homes the kundli is made soon after a child is born, often by the family pandit, and brought out again for naming, schooling choices, shaadi and griha pravesh. It records which rashi was rising in the east and where each graha stood at the minute you were born, as seen from your birthplace.
The chart is split into twelve bhavas. The first speaks about your body and temperament, the second about family money and speech, the seventh about your spouse, the tenth about your work and reputation, and so on around the wheel. Reading a kundli mostly means asking which graha sits in which bhava, and which bhavas its lord connects.
The lagna moves into a new rashi roughly every two hours, so a birth time off by ten or fifteen minutes can put you on the wrong ascendant. If you can, take the time from your birth certificate or hospital record rather than family memory.
