How Choghadiya Works

Choghadiya splits the daylight from sunrise to sunset into eight equal parts, and the night from sunset to the next sunrise into eight more. Each part is close to one and a half hours — 'chau' (four) 'ghadi', since a ghadi is 24 minutes — but the exact length follows that day's sunrise and sunset, so summer daytime slots run longer than winter ones.

There are seven choghadiya names. Amrit, Shubh and Labh are favourable; Char is neutral and traditionally good for travel; Udveg, Kaal and Rog are avoided for anything new. The weekday decides which name opens the day — Udveg on Sunday, Amrit on Monday, Rog on Tuesday — and the rest follow in a fixed cycle.

Traders in Gujarat and Rajasthan have long used choghadiya to open new account books, start a sale or sign a deal, and many families use it for travel, vehicle purchase or a quick puja when no pandit-fixed muhurat is available. For weddings, griha pravesh and other major samskaras, a full muhurat from the panchang is still the norm.

Frequently asked questions

Which choghadiya is best for starting something new?
Amrit, Shubh and Labh. Amrit is treated as good for almost any work, Shubh for ceremonies and auspicious beginnings, and Labh for business, trade and study. Char is fine for travel.
Can I use these New Delhi timings in another city?
Only roughly. Choghadiya follows local sunrise and sunset, so slots begin earlier in eastern cities such as Kolkata and later in western ones such as Mumbai or Ahmedabad, even though all of India uses IST.
What if a good choghadiya overlaps Rahu Kaal?
Most families treat them as two separate checks and pick the part of a good choghadiya that falls outside Rahu Kaal. Today's Rahu Kaal is shown on this page alongside the choghadiya.
