What Your Lagna Means
The lagna, or ascendant, is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. In a Vedic kundli it becomes the first house, and every other house is counted from it — so the lagna decides which sign rules your career house, your marriage house and the rest of the chart.
Because the whole zodiac rises over the horizon once a day, the lagna changes roughly every two hours, faster for some signs and slower for others. That is why an accurate birth time matters far more here than for your Moon sign: a difference of a few minutes can move someone born near a sign boundary into the next lagna.
The planet that rules your lagna sign is the lagnesh, the chart's lord. Its strength and placement are read as a guide to health, temperament and the general direction of life. - What is the difference between lagna and rashi?
- Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in at birth and is used for daily rashifal and Guna Milan. Your lagna is the sign rising in the east at birth and sets up the houses of the whole kundli. Most people have a different lagna and rashi.
- I don't know my exact birth time. Can I still find my lagna?
- Only approximately. Try the earliest and latest times you think are possible: if both give the same lagna, you can rely on it. If they differ, an astrologer can attempt birth-time rectification from past life events.
- Is the lagna the same as the Western rising sign?
- It is the same idea, measured differently. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which today sits about 24° ahead of the sidereal one, so your Vedic lagna is often one sign earlier than your Western rising sign.
