Why there are two Ekadashi dates

In 2026 Ekadashi tithi begins after sunrise on 20 November and ends shortly before sunrise on 21 November, so it does not cover a full sunrise-to-sunrise day. Smarta households (most grihasthas) fast on 20 November. Vaishnava traditions follow the Gauna rule and fast on 21 November, breaking it on the morning of 22 November.

Parana: when to break the fast

Ekadashi parana is done on the next day, after sunrise and within Dwadashi, but never during Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi. Because Dwadashi begins early on 21 November, Hari Vasara runs until around midday, and the parana window for the 20 November fast opens in the early afternoon.

Drik Panchang gives the parana window as 1:11 PM to 3:18 PM for New Delhi, and Prokerala gives 1:17 PM to 3:27 PM for Ujjain. Other panchangs differ by a few minutes, and the window shifts with your city's sunrise, so confirm locally in the Panchang.

How Dev Uthani Ekadashi is observed

  • Lord Vishnu is believed to wake from four months of yoga nidra. In the evening, families draw his footprints in rice paste or geru, place sugarcane, water chestnut (singhara), sweet potato and seasonal produce under a sieve or basket, and wake him with bells and the call 'Utho Dev'.
  • The fast is kept from sunrise, by many without grains; rice is traditionally avoided on every Ekadashi.
  • Bhishma Panchak, a five-day observance, begins on this Ekadashi and ends on Kartik Purnima.

Tulsi Vivah and the wedding season

Tulsi Vivah, the ceremonial marriage of the Tulsi plant to Shaligram or Lord Vishnu, is most widely held on Dwadashi, Saturday 21 November 2026, though some families perform it on the Ekadashi itself. It is treated as the first wedding of the season, and human weddings follow: the first vivah muhurat both our sources agree on is also 21 November.
