Ganga snan and deep daan

A bath in the Ganga or another sacred river on Kartik Purnima is considered among the most meritorious of the year, and large crowds gather at Haridwar, Prayagraj, Varanasi and Garhmukteshwar. Because Purnima tithi is current at sunrise on 24 November, the snan is taken that morning, traditionally before sunrise. It is followed by daan, especially of food, clothes and lamps, and by deep daan, floating or lighting diyas at a river, temple or Tulsi plant in the evening.

Dev Deepawali in Varanasi

Dev Deepawali, the 'Diwali of the gods', is celebrated on the evening of Kartik Purnima, about two weeks after Diwali. It marks Lord Shiva's victory over the demon Tripurasura, which is why the day is also called Tripuri or Tripurari Purnima. The ghats of Kashi are lined with lakhs of diyas during Pradosh Kaal, about 5:08 PM to 7:47 PM in Varanasi this year, followed by a grand Ganga Aarti.
